Counter the signs of ageing

Brow Lift Surgery

The position of the eyebrows defines the foundation of facial expression

A low or descended eyebrow from ageing can have a powerful ageing effect or make a person look tired even when they are well rested. On the other hand, a high brow after an overzealous brow lift can make an person look alarmed, surprised or even scary. Dr Sawhney at Sculpted Gold Coast believes the art of brow lifting is to raise the brow to a normal and even level to impart a rejuvenated and refreshed look.

It is important to maintain the patient’s ability to raise the eyebrow further with muscles of the forehead to express an alarmed or surprised look. An aggressive and unnatural-looking, poorly performed procedure can impact this ability.

Why undergo a brow lift?

A brow lift corrects sagging and low sitting eyebrows. Restore your youthful appearance by surgically raising your eyebrows and removing excess tissue. A brow lift softens the forehead and brows reducing the visibility of crow’s feet, forehead creases, furrow lines and frown lines. Some patients find their low hanging eyebrows give them the appearance of looking grumpy however a brow lift can reverse this. Patients can correct their eyebrow asymmetry as well as restoring laxity to the eyebrow skin. The eyebrows can change the way we see the face, and therefore a higher position can restore your youthful appearance.

A brow lift is for patients with asymmetrical brows. Those with excess forehead wrinkles and fine lines forming are the perfect candidates for a brow lift. It is important to have realistic expectations of the procedure and what is attainable. This surgery is commonly performed for those between 25 and 65 years of age, as this is when the body begins to produce less collagen. A brow lift stimulates the production of collagen and the rejuvenation of damaged cells. This can also improve signs of hyperpigmentation and remove skin imperfections in the process.

Brow Lift Procedure

There are several brow lift procedures. These include Open, Endoscopic, Temporal, Classic, Limited Incision and Direct. Dr Sawhney will describe these techniques and choose a procedure that best suits your needs after explaining pros and cons of the options that pertain to you. He will assess your individual needs and facial structure to decide on the correct procedure for you.

Open Brow Lift: An open brow lift begins with a large incision across the forehead, either in a forehead crease or in the hairline. Dr Sawhney will lift the skin off the underlying tissue. The surgeon reshapes the forehead muscles and fat into a flattering position before removing excess skin and fat to lift the brows. He then pulls the skin down and stitches the brows in place. This procedure aims to hide the scar effectively.

Temporal “Mini” Brow Lift: The temporal brow lift is performed under local anaesthesia as it is a simplistic version of the endoscopic brow lift. For this lift, the surgeon makes two incisions in the hairline, above each brow. He then closes these incisions with absorbable sutures which provide a lift to the eyebrows. This procedure can take approximately 25 minutes to complete.

Classic Brow Lift: The classic brow lift is when the surgeon cuts across the forehead from ear to ear. The surgeon lifts the forehead skin and then removes excess tissue and fat from the forehead. He moves the muscle if needed and then lifts the eyebrows, before removing the excess skin.

Endoscopic Brow Lift: An endoscopic brow lift is when a long thin tube is inserted through several small cuts in the scalp so the surgeon can gain access to the brows. This tube, known as an endoscope, uses a light and video camera to provide access to the area. This procedure takes 45 minutes to complete.

Limited Incision Brow Lift: This procedure is a combination of the endoscopic and open brow lift. This procedure does not require an endoscope however the surgeon makes a small number of incisions to lift the eyebrows with the coronal approach. The surgeon makes these incisions in the hairline to hide the scarring.

Direct Brow Lift: This procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia to numb the forehead. The surgeon removes the skin above the eyebrows to shape the position of the eyebrows before he stitches them up.

A brow lift by nature also lifts the upper eyelid. The procedure is commonly performed with upper eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty for a balanced rejuvenation. In your consultation at the Sculpted Clinic, Dr Sawhney will assess your brows and eyelids and advise on what procedure or procedures would give you your desired result and why.

After the surgery, patients feel discomfort and numbness around the incision site however this is only temporary. Swelling and bruising are side effects of every surgery however for a brow lift they are more noticeable in the cheeks and eyes.

How much does a brow lift cost on the Gold Coast?

Our clinic determines the cost of a brow lift through various factors of the procedure. When undergoing a procedure with Sculpted at our Gold Coast clinic, you will receive a personalised fee summary for your personal procedure. Each procedure is tailored to your specific needs and therefore the cost is tailored to your procedure. It is important to have a consultation prior to your treatment as Dr Sawhney will assess your suitability to the treatment and the type of procedure that will be used to achieve your ideal results. There are several cost factors to consider before booking a brow lift. The cost also takes into account the surgical, medication, anaesthesia and hospital fees and is affected by any combined procedures. Contact our Sculpted team to receive a tailored estimate of your brow lift costs.

Before undergoing a brow lift, patients should check if medicare and health insurance cover the costs. Some insurance companies cover the cost of brow lifts in the case of vision impairment caused by brow skin or placement. It is important to confirm with your health insurance that they cover this particular clause. Unfortunately medicare does not have a schedule that covers a rebate for a brow lift as most brow lifts are for elective cosmetic purposes. If your case is reconstructive, medicare may provide a rebate. Contact our team at Sculpted Gold Coast to learn more about what your brow lift can cost.

What should I expect in terms of recovery?

Recovery from a brow lift can take between two to three weeks before patients can return to their daily routine. We recommend that patients stop smoking prior to their brow lift procedure. Patients should abstain from nicotine for six weeks before and after the procedure. They are also recommended to avoid excess sun exposure and wear sunscreen to preserve the results of their brow lift. Surgeons carefully position brow lift scars so they become less noticeable as they heal. They place them in the skin’s creases or in locations where the hair covers the scar. Patients can cover their scars with makeup until the scars heal. We recommend patients to take their prescribed pain medication after the procedure to manage any pain or discomfort felt.

Swelling and bruising will occur after the procedure so therefore it is important to apply a cold compress to the affected area to reduce the swelling. Swelling commonly occurs around the cheeks and eyes for around one week. Dr Sawhney will suggest patients elevate their head when lying down and avoid physical activity whilst healing to prevent any discomfort. If the treatment area has a dressing or drain applied, the surgeon will remove these within one to two days. Either the surgeon will use dissolvable sutures or stitches and they will remove the stitches after a week. Patients usually return to work within ten days. We encourage patients to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few weeks post-surgery. Results can take between one to three weeks to show as each patient and procedure will produce different results.

It is imperative that prior to undergoing a brow lift, patients organise for someone to drive them home from surgery. Patients must not drive for 24 hours after surgery. We suggest our patients take a week to two weeks off work to recover from their procedure.

Risks and complications

Like all surgeries, the brow comes with risks. Each procedure brings with it different risks which Dr Sawhney will detail in your consultation. For at least a month after the classic and endoscopic procedure, patients experience itching as a side effect. These procedures can both come with numbness and tingling of the treated area. All procedures will experience various degrees of discomfort including bruising and swelling. All brow lift surgeries will result in scars, with each procedure designed to hide the placement of the scar. For some patients they experience scars that do not heal properly after surgery and require revisional surgery or further assistance.

After a procedure such as a brow lift it is not uncommon for patients to experience forehead numbness and in rare cases paralysis of the forehead. Infection can occur at the incision site. However, Dr Sawhney will educate you on maintaining the surgical site. In rare cases, patients will have problems with eyebrow movement after the surgery and a loss of sensation around the incision site. Eyebrow paralysis is extremely rare and this occurs when a surgeon damages the facial nerve close to the surgical site. In cases where this nerve is affected, patients take one year to recover.

Other surgery risks include:

  • Reaction to Anaesthesia
  • Bleeding
  • Hairline changes
  • Eye dryness
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Brow asymmetry
  • Short term nausea and vomiting
  • Minimal forehead muscle movement
  • Fluid build-up
  • Loss of hair at incision site
  • Blood clots
  • Skin loss
