Also known as brachioplasty, an arm lift reshapes your upper arms by removing excess skin and fat. Once the surgical incisions have completely healed, you will have smoother, younger-looking skin in your upper arms. Ideal candidates for an arm lift During your consultation, your surgeon will check your health history and cosmetic goals to determine if you’re a good fit for the procedure. In general, you’re an ideal candidate if: You are bothered by the “batwing appearance” of your upper arms. You don’t have a bleeding disorder. You don’t smoke. You have a stable weight. You have excess skin and fat in your upper arms that are caused by aging and extreme weight loss. You have low self-esteem. You have realistic expectations. Your excess fat in your upper arms does not respond to diet and exercise. Our arm lift image gallery should help you to set realistic expectations from the procedure. How an arm lift is performed The procedure is usually performed under general or local anaesthesia. Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, your surgeon will create an incision inside your elbow that extends to your armpit. Your surgeon will then remove excess fat through liposuction, a procedure that uses a small, thin tube to suck fat from a body area. To achieve a rejuvenated appearance of your upper arms, your surgeon will use sutures to tighten loose skin. Your surgeon will then close the incisions using dissolvable sutures. Sterile gauze will be placed over your surgical wound to protect it from injury. Expected recovery time Immediately after the procedure, it is normal to feel pain and soreness on the incision sites. After 1 to 2 days, the discomfort is minimal. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you should be able to return to normal activities in 3 to 4 weeks. It is important to keep in mind that the recovery time may vary from patient to patient.
