4 things to know before getting rhinoplasty on the Gold Coast

Before getting rhinoplasty, it’s important to know your options, what to expect, and have realistic expectations. In this blog, we will look at four things you should know before getting rhinoplasty.  This list is by no means comprehensive, and we always recommend contacting our friendly team if you have any questions regarding rhinoplasty.

1] Why your surgeon matters

Who performs your surgery is important. And part of this is understanding the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and plastic surgeon. A cosmetic surgeon is a general doctor who can perform surgery. A plastic surgeon is a specialist doctor with post-graduate training. A plastic surgeon is more qualified, more skilled and more experienced when it comes to delicate procedures like rhinoplasty.

Dr Raja Sawhney is a Board Certified Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgeon. As the Director of Sculpted Clinic on the Gold Coast of Australia, he specialises in Reconstructive surgery. If you are looking for a trusted, experienced surgeon who has delivered outstanding results for his patients—Dr Raja is the surgeon for you.

2] Planning for downtime

Ideally, you want to take at least 7 to 10 days off after your rhinoplasty. To minimise post-operative swelling we recommend not taking any anti-inflammatories two weeks prior to surgery. The first seven days after your surgery you will being wearing the splint.

This will be taken off at your first post-op appointment. At this time, Dr Sawhney will assess your nose and determine whether you are able to return to work.

3] What to expect post-op

The results of surgery won’t be immediately visible. What you can expect post-op is some slight bruising and swelling, as well as congestion. For a few days after the operation, you may notice a little bleeding—this is normal. If you are worried, don’t hesitate to contact us.

You should only experience mild discomfort for a few days after the surgery. However, this does differ from person to person.

4] Final results can take a year to show

This is often the hardest thing for people to understand. The initial swelling will dissipate after roughly two weeks. Then, the residual swelling should go down after six weeks. However, for the tip of your nose the residual swelling may only completely go away after 12 months.

Swelling doesn’t dissipate symmetrically. Which means that during the healing process your nose may look asymmetrical. Do not worry. This is normal.

What is not normal is if you experience any:

  • Chills
  • Pus coming from the nose
  • Redness
  • Fever

If you experience any of these uncommon symptoms, it is important you call your surgeon immediately.
