Cosmetic rhinoplasty is a procedure to address purely cosmetic issues with the nose, helping patients to achieve better facial harmony and balance. Whilst this is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures, it’s important to note that it is certainly not simple surgery, and without the expertise of a surgeon with significant experience in this area, patients can be left with a result which they do not feel fully addressed their concerns.
In fact, many people find themselves seeking a second rhinoplasty to correct unsatisfactory cosmetic results, or even different issues which have occurred as a direct result of surgery which has not gone quite as expected. Disappointment can be avoided by carefully selecting a surgeon with significant experience in this area.
Reconstructive rhinoplasty is a procedure to correct both functional and cosmetic problems with the nose”
These issues may have been caused through congenital malformations, injuries, illnesses such as cancer, or even previous surgery which went awry.
These conditions can leave patients with a physical reminder, a functional issue which causes difficulties breathing, or both. Not only can this be distressing to the patient, but it can also cause physical problems. Through this type of nose surgery it is possible for patients to move on from these problems and live life to the fullest.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under a local or general anaesthetic. Dr Sawhney will discuss the best option for you during your consultation. Once the anaesthetic has been administered, Dr Sawhney will make an incision across the small area of skin that connects your nostrils. This is the case for open rhinoplasty. In the case of closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made on the inside of the nose. The skin is then moved away from the underlying structures of the nose so that Dr Sawhney can remove or reshape the inner bone and cartilage.
The skin is then draped back over the nose and the incision is closed up. Dressing and a nasal splint is applied before you’re moved into a recovery area for several hours.
If your procedure is significantly complex, you may need to spend a night in hospital. In other instances, patients are able to return home on the same day as their nose job, provided someone is able to drive them home. Following your procedure, you will need to wear a nasal splint and possibly dressing for about a week. Swelling and bruising can be expected, particularly around the eye area. These effects can last up to two weeks and will vary in severity depending on how your body reacts to the surgery. Patients need to spend at least a week at home after rhinoplasty but two weeks is ideal.
Once the splint is removed, your nose may be slightly swollen but it will be very mild. This swelling can last up to six months. It’s important to wait at least six months before deciding you are unhappy with the results of your nose job. Any strenuous activity should be avoided for at least six weeks, as should any activities that could damage your nose before it’s healed. Dr Sawhney will also provide you with specific aftercare instructions that will help make your recovery as smooth and simple as possible.
