Facial Fat Transfer
Sculpted clinic now offers a more permanent solution to volume loss
What is fat transfer?
Autologous fat transfer is the process of transferring fat from one part of the body to another. This is performed with liposuction/a> from a distant site (e.g. flanks, thighs, abdomen) and harvesting the fat. The fat is the refined and injected as required into the cheeks, under the eyes, nose, lips and around the mouth to restore volume. Unlike dermal fillers, this procedure doesn’t need to be repeated every 12-24 months. It can also increase the quality of overlying skin by stimulating regeneration.
Why undergo a facial fat transfer treatment?
Fat transfer treatment can replace volume that has been lost, resulting in reduction of fine lines, creases and wrinkles/rhytids. It can be effective in revolumising the temples, cheek, and tear trophs under the eyes. It can also be used to correct minor issues with asymmetry or depressions from any scarring. This procedure is less invasive then open surgery but still has significant risks attached that must be taken into consideration when considering this treatment.
Does the fat stay forever?
When injecting fat not all the fat necessarily takes. With the latest techniques used through Sculpted Clinic 80-90% fat take rates can be achieved. With time and further passage of time volume is lost but much slower than with dermal fillers. Also, fat grafting causes swelling that can take upto 1-2 months to completely resolve so the final result can be assessed. During this time resolving swelling can give the impression of the fat dissolving while this is not the case.
Are there any side effects from fat transfer?
Side effects include redness, swelling, and pain. Most of these are self-limiting and resolve in the first one to two weeks.
Risks
- Fat non-take or death
- Oil cysts
- Clumping and lumpiness
- Injury to nerves and paralysis – usually temporary
- Injury to vessels and bruising – this can be troublesome
- Inadvertent injection into a vessel can lead to tissue death and blindness when injecting around the eye (this is very rare)
Recovery
Recovery from facial fat transfer depends on how much swelling and bruising you get. Most of the swelling and bruising resolves in 1-3 weeks, depending on the amount of fat transfer and severity of brusing and swelling. Arnica tablets (over the counter from your chemist) and ice packs can help limit and expediate resolution and recovery. Final results are assessed at 3 months post procedure.
